Bruce Roger has been teaching yoga as Yoga St. Louis for 30 years, and for 10 at his current location—3305 Jamieson Avenue, St. Louis. It’s off Arsenal Street, just south of Maplewood.

Roger said he got into yoga because he was looking for a way to exercise, and it sounded interesting because “as a musician I didn’t really like running around to aerobics listening to disco music.” That was 35 years ago.

Roger went to India to learn yoga, and when he came back he didn’t have a job.

“I probably foolishly thought, ‘I’ll teach yoga,’” he said. “At the time there were no other full-time yoga teachers in the area.

“The difference between what I practice and teach versus other forms of yoga is that we work a lot on intelligent action, precise alignment, and then, importantly, there’s a sequence of how one learns,” he said.

He said the learning sequence may be different than the practice sequence, so it becomes individualized.

“That begins to create success in yoga as opposed to a random practice,” he said.

He said the rudiments can be learned fairly quickly, “but it’s always the mistake you pick up when you don’t learn methodically—those are the ones that come back and hurt you in the end. You’re doing it more intelligently. You can get the effect you want.”

Roger is offering a free class on Friday, June 27, 6 – 7:30 p.m. at his studio, 3305 Jamieson Avenue, St. Louis 63139.
