Craft Beer Cellar announces 2nd location: it’s not Maplewood

Craft Beer Cellar, with a store in Clayton, will open a second location at 5760 Chippewa Street in the Southampton neighborhood, according to Feast Magazine. The owners, brothers Brandon and Ryan Nickelson, tried Maplewood first.

In June 2016 Maplewood Planning and Zoning approved the request unanimously. The city council took until September to approve it, after first amending the city ordinance on package liquor stores, but then the owners said they couldn’t go through with it; not saying why.

The new location will be similar to the Clayton store, though the shop’s bar will be twice the size of the Clayton bar, featuring 12 to 14 rotating craft beer taps and seating for up to 50 guests, Feast Magazine says.

“It’s going to be a really comfortable space compared to the Clayton location,” Brandon told Feast Magazine. “We’ll have seating around the service bar as well as a few communal tables.” They’re also excited to have their own parking lot.

  1. I believe this is the existing laundramat moving. It is the only one for miles around. The parking lot is always full at the current location so this will be an improvement. Many people need to use it. There are plenty of other restaurants in the area. If your washer or dryer goes out you will be glad to have one in the area

  2. Word on the street is that the Maplewood location would have fallen through regardless of the council dragging their feet.

  3. Sounds to me with everyone not happy with the city council knocking cool places like this out of Maplewood, maybe you all need to vote them out..

    • Luckily the old mayor is gone and some new council members will be there. Unfortunately Shawn Faulkingham is still here. He needed to go but no one opposed him in the election.

        • Whether one agrees or disagrees with the decisions elected officials make, the truth is they put in a lot of time without a lot of rewards, or, often, appreciation. Maybe folks should stop complaining and run for office themselves . . . but they may find they’re like ants on a log floating down a river, arguing about who’s steering.

    • Agree. And much more parking as well. Laundry Mats and Chicken Shacks are the preferred business models in MWP…

  4. Looks like they are moving into an abandoned gas station behind Hampton Village. The Maplewood strip would be a much better location for this type of operation.

  5. It was a missed opportunity for Maplewood for sure.

There was enormous community support and the Council members dragged their feet.

  6. Really happy for the CBC crew that they were finally able to secure a 2nd location – I’m sure that they will do extremely well in this area and I know that I’m definitely excited to check out the new store. It sounds great! Too bad I’ll be driving from Maplewood instead of walking down the street. Still sorely disappointed that the council at the time (minus Barry) drug their feet on this issue for so long, especially when there was such strong community support for the store.

  7. Hugely disappointed in everyone on the council (except Barry) at the time for dropping the ball here.
