The Maplewood Plan and Zoning Commission Monday night heard from an owner of the Craft Beer Cellar, in Clayton, who wants to open a second location, in Maplewood.

The new location would be at 7415 Manchester Road, where Maplewood Galleries closed this month.

The owner, Brandon Nickelson — his brother and co-owner Ryan was there too — told the commission their Clayton store (8113 Maryland Avenue) offers more than a thousand types of beer with a focus on local breweries. They also offer classes and tastings, and hold festivals. The store has a bar with nine beers on tap. The Maplewood store would have a bar with 12 to 15 taps.

They were at the meeting because Maplewood laws prohibit package liquor stores in the Special Business District — that’s how the city would classify Craft Beer Cellar — the law would need to be altered not to be a blanket prohibition.

Maplewood Assistant City Manager Anthony Traxler said he and city manager, Marty Corcoran had visited the Clayton store and said it’s very nice. Commission member Dan Noonan said Craft Beer Cellar would be a “great fit” for the community. He mentioned that the store would be near the future Side Project Brewing building.

Nickelson said the Maplewood store would be 2,500 square feet — bigger than the Clayton store, with 80 parking spaces in the back. He said the Clayton location had $1.2 million in sales last year with about 250 customers per day.

The city staff will write an ordinance to be considered that would allow the store on the corner.

The commission also approved a request for a conditional use permit for Mauhaus ‘cat cafe’ at 3101 Sutton Boulevard, which will now go before city council.

  1. In case you missed it, Larder & Cupboard offers several different local craft beers, including the first availability of Old Bakery Brewery in Alton. We also offer tastings and classes, including a Beer and Chocolate Pairing Class on June 10.

    • Nobody besides a corporate/chain fast food place can afford to buy the Shell station property.

      • Yes. Im not sure why people don’t understand this. It was the same way with Tim Hortons. That section will always be a chain.

        • Because many people don’t understand that just because they really believe something it’s no more likely to be true.
I’m thing of getting “Feels before Reals” tattooed on my ribs to show how deep and caring I am.
