Maplewood Richmond Heights wrestling hosted a tri wrestling meet along with Clayton and Parkway West Wednesday. MRH beat Clayton 42-24 and Parkway West 36-18.
The event included the first annual MRH Wrestling Alumni Night. Wrestling alum were invited to come back and meet the current team and the watch them wrestle.
The wrestling alumni who attended (and are pictured, not necessarily in order): Kevin Kastner, Justin Kea, Jonathan Webb (alum and current MRH baseball coach), Peter Webb, Brandon McClure (alum and current MRH asst. wrestling coach), Jeremy McClure, Mr. Brinkley, Jason Watkins (the last MRH State Champion – 1996, 112 lb. class), Mike Patton, Mark Watkins, Melvin Brewer, Kevin Burgess, Stephen Peters and Cory Reichert (current MRH wrestling coach, but not an alum). MRH contributed the photo and information.
My Dad is Al Horvat and was a state champ wrestler back in 1947 I believe. He was coached by Del Pizzo. Then in 1970 I attend MRH and Del Pizzo was my principal. Wonderful man with a big heart.
I wish my father could have been there- He started WRESTLING TEAMS at MRH Took 3 men to his first state meet and took 3rd place overall. He took an alumni and high school wrestlers to the AAU meet and usually won. His teams won 6 straight STATE TITLEs when there was only one division then he became Assistant PRINCIPAL and they would let him coach.
