Candidates for public office in Missouri are required to file a 40 Day Before Report, detailing contributions and expenditures for their campaign. It’s due 40 days before the election date. Reports are also due eight days before and 30 days after the election.

The candidates for mayor of Brentwood all filed electronically on the Missouri Ethics Commission website. A candidate can also file in person at the St. Louis County Board of Election. See also: Brentwood aldermanic candidates file financial reports

In ballot order, Patrick Toohey, Mark Wilson and Chris Thornton are running for mayor.

Patrick Toohey’s reported itemized donations:

  • American Subcontractors Association, $1,000
  • Association of General Contractors, $100
  • Don Musick, $1,000

Toohey reports spending a total of $732.88 for the election.

Toohey had previously let his CPA license expire. He has paid the fee to have that reinstated, according to state records.

Mark Wilson’s report itemizes donations—$200 or less from Mary Eschbach, Cheryl Emery, Jack Bock (spelled Beck on the MEC site), Karen Smith, Ed Wright and Mark Wilson. Tom Martin donated $1,000.

Wilson reports spending $932.99 at Gene Del Printing for flyers.

Chris Thornton filed a limited report, which states he has formed an election committee, with no financial details. A candidate files a limited report when he has less than $500 in contributions and expenditures.

Mayor Pat Kelly has had a file (now terminated, because he is not running again) with the board of elections for the 22 years he was a Brentwood elected official. Any money remaining at termination is required to be zeroed out. Kelly had $370.90, which he donated to St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church.

  1. I agree with Chester as on his statement that he prefers to listen to all the candidates campaigns and positions on issues prior to making a decision on whom to support either financially or with our vote. That is what I am doing and my hope is that others are doing the same. It takes alot of money to run a campaign for Mayor even in a small town as Brentwood and I do not feel that it is a big issue. I do not think any candidate is going to pay for the campaign by himself and it would take alot of small contributions from residents to run an effective campaign. DCM and Don Musick have consideralble interest in Brentwood as they own much real estate in our City and have a vested interest in the future of our city. Even though they are not a residential resident with a vote for mayor they are a strong commercial resident and I for one do not have a problem with accepting funds from them as long as it is reported in the proper way which from what I have seen that has been done.

  2. No offense Chester. I just think these disclosures are every bit as critical to the candidate’s true agenda as any words they speak. Like how much RE in Brentwood is under Musick’s flagship, and subcontractors–same question? If you are really listening, then at least acknowledge how COMMERCIAL versus residential decisions ride on the outcome of this election. That is among the greatest concerns residents have voiced.

    • Pretty good point. If you look back over a decade to 15 years you’ll see the same law firms, contractors/builders (one owned by an alderman) developers and banks involved in many of the new buildings and TIF deals throughout Brentwood. The information isn’t easily available but its out there if you dig around. A former Brentwood mayor worked briefly for Musick, Its probably good to watch which of these companies supports a particular candidate as its only a few degrees away from the past mayor and his happy band of pirates which I think is what most people are trying to avoid?.

  3. Some of us little people prefer to listen to all the candidates campaigns and positions on issues prior to making a decision on whom to support either financially or with our vote.

  4. Great information to have. One candidate is completely supported by contractor vendors, and others are completely supported by we little people.

    • This campaign finance report is quite revealing, and such reports often accurately predict how a candidate will behavior after he or she is elected. In this mayoral race, one candidate has received 100% of his money from special commercial interests and 0% from city residents, while his challengers have received only smalI donations from average joes who actually live in Brentwood. How embarrassing for Mr. Toohey! He’s been representing a quarter of Brentwood’s residents as their alderman for the past 3 years, yet not a single constituent of his has contributed money to his campaign for mayor. Ouch!!! That tells me all I need to know about the man.

      • AH, I wouldn’t count Toohey out just yet. Keep in mind he represents “Birdland”, these people rarely pay attention to much going on at city hall. Typically younger, transient, no kids, many renters. I think Toohey has shown himself to be an original thinker, hard worker and unafraid to go against the grain. He deserves to be heard in full, not ruled out based upon his financial report. Plus we haven’t yet heard his position on the city/county merger, abortion or river boat gambling.
