Editorial: Three Candidates, One Shared Commitment to MRH Schools

By: Loretta Colvin, Christy Martinez, and Loren Widmer-Tiefenbrun

On April 7th, the Maplewood-Richmond Heights community will have the opportunity to vote for three seats on the Board of Education (BOE). There are five candidates who have many similarities in their campaign platforms which center around student learning, employee well-being, classroom equity, and fiscal responsibility. What sets us apart in this election is that we are the candidates that received endorsement from the MRH National Education Association (NEA) for the three open seats in this election. We are proud to have earned the support of the educators who know our schools best, because teacher trust is essential to effective school board leadership and to decisions that strengthen classrooms, support staff, and keep students at the center of our work.

We are collaborating because of our shared vision and values for the MRH school board. Working as a team allowed us to knock on more doors in the community and hear from more voices. Through meaningful conversations with people, our team is learning what issues are most important to voters, which will inform our decision making if we are elected. This approach is intentional as we find in-person conversations more meaningful than reliance on online platforms which can amplify a more limited number of voices, particularly when these environments can be used by a smaller group to target candidates or their supporters in a way that can close the door on meaningful dialogue, further dividing our community.
