Part of the roof at Claude's blew onto a car next to the building.

Wind gusts as high as 55 MPH, according to the National Weather Service, caused havoc in Maplewood Thursday afternoon around 5 p.m. as a front moved through.

photo 1Parts of roofs blew off Claude’s Auto Service and Tint Tech on Big Bend Boulevard north of Flora Avenue. At Claude’s, pieces of the roof blew onto cars on the lot. At Tint Tech the roof flew up and knocked over power lines and a gas line was broken. The gas break was mitigated within 20 minutes.

Maplewood and Shrewsbury police and fire departments blocked northbound Big Bend traffic while crews worked.photo 2 Traffic was detoured onto Flora and Sutton.

Also around Brentwood and Maplewood, from 40 South News Facebook in a discussion about power going out:

  • Got a shadow puppet show going on here in Brentwood.
  • Power lines down at Brentwood Place apartments. Live lines landed on a car and no one could get in or out of the complex for awhile.
  • Keeps going off and coming right back on where I am here in maplewood, about half a dozen times now!
  • I’m near the corner of Manchester and Big Bend. The power was out for about 20 minutes then came back on.
  • At work now, but lights are only flickering at Hampton and Arsenal
  • Tried to comment earlier, but the power went out again. 3-4 times, longest for about a minute. In Maplewood. I am now going to go buy a battery backup for the Internet router. Annoying.
  • Shop n Save has no power.
  • Yep same at the dance studio here, Lisa!
  • My power has gone off twice here in Maplewood for about a minute both times
