Man steals iPads from Walmart, arrested when he returns: police

A St. Louis man, Maliq A Shabazz, of the 5900 block of Bermuda Drive, has been charged with a Class C felony in the theft of four iPads at the Maplewood Walmart on Sept. 6, according to a Maplewood Police report.

At the Walmart , Shabazz selected various items of merchandise, including four iPads from the electronics department. A sales associate brought the items to a register for him, who waited in line to make his purchases.

After the iPads had been scanned and bagged, but before the full transaction was completed, Shabazz reached around the counter, grabbed the bag containing the iPads and ran from the store. The total value of the stolen items was $1,315.

The defendant returned to the store several days later and was recognized by store employees, who notified Maplewood police. He was arrested but declined to make a statement.

Shabazz was release by Maplewood pending application of warrants, but was transferred to the custody of Brentwood police, who were investigating him for unrelated offenses. During questioning by Brentwood police, Shabazz admitted stealing iPads from the Walmart in Maplewood and said he had them at his residence.
