The third and final phase to improve Manchester Road in Maplewood began in this summer and is expected to be completed in the spring, according to Maplewood Director of Public Works Anthony Traxler.
The work is to include repaving and installing sidewalks from Bredell Avenue to Hanley Road and installing a left turn lane at Laclede Station Road.
Traxler said a landscape architect contracted by the city designed the sidewalk running from the Metrolink station to Hanley Road. He said the area it will be landscaped with plants when finished, and that aesthetics were the driving factor in the design of the winding sidewalk.
Traxler also said the three curb cuts in the new curb were existing, and the property owner wanted them to remain.
A straight sidewalk would have been more functional. Looks like the part cutoff by the street isn’t wide enough for two people to pass each other safely without having to step into the street.
With all the pothole filled side streets in Maplewood why are we wasting limited taxpayer money on this nonsense? To attract more riders who don’t pay a dime to ride the Metrolink?
I believe the money was a federal grant. It could not be spent on small streets.
Excuse me–I pay $78 per month to ride the metro. The train is full everyday and everyone has a pass when the cops come check. Where do you get the idea that we don’t pay a dime?
Right there with you. I pay my $78 and ride the #32 and # 57 metrobus to and from my work in Rock Hill. Any given time we are packed in those buses like sardines. Gotta love folks who post commons without any sort of knowledge….?
drive your car away from here old man
Is that second sidewalk picture an ADA compliant width? Need to get Steve Patterson on the case.
I won’t comment on the design because I can’t quite picture it yet while unfinished, but I’m glad for the sidewalk. If you haven’t noticed, our town thrives on being walkable. Yes, it’s no fun for cars right now, but be patient, it gets better.
What a horrible mess by Aldis. I’ve learned to avoid Maplewood like the plague. First it was the BS at McCausland and SW that lasted twice as long as promised, then the road construction by Schlafly, now this. I live in Clifton Heights and absolutely avoid having to go to Maplewood. There’s great stores, restaurants, etc elsewhere. Enjoy!
So is this telling me that Laclede at Manchester will not be open till then?
I could take or leave the shape… Might we be getting a crosswalk signal for any of the three crossings currently devoid of them?
Would you prefer it to remain like it is, a trash filled lot with a old asphalt slab on it? I think it is good to have a better look for the city for people coming into our fair town by Manchester and Hanley.
Enjoy it while you can. It’ll be torn out and the money flushed before you know it.
Test pure right, that whole intersection is scheduled for a full revamp..pork Barrel spending at its best
Yeah, I’m not really seeing it either. It’s likely to be torn out as developers consume that intersection. Over/under: 3 yrs.
And hey, thanks to the genius who decided to leave the left turn option at Laclede Station & Manchester. No turn lane, only 1 lane open, and 50 cars sitting in backed up traffic while 1 doofus waits to make a left from Manchester onto southbound Laclede. I’m guessing the guy who made the decision lives down that way. Wouldn’t it have been better to have no left turn there, and arrange a detour for the left turners? And after a couple of months of backups, why haven’t they made the change? The backups happen right in front of city hall for God’s sake.
Did my tax dollars go to make this waste of cement? Why do we need this? Help me understand. A peaceful escape on a major intersection? WTH?
For those of us who walk to the metrolink station, we sure are excited to walk on real sidewalks instead of the shoulder of the road and crumbling asphalt and parking lots and muddy ditches. Seriously, have you ever tried to walk down that stretch? This is long overdue.
Seems like a worthy investment to me. It was an unsafe and unattractive section of Manchester.
Agree.
