A Tale of Two Albums – Part Six
As I have mentioned in past posts, I am not 100% certain that I know who created these two albums that have proved to be so fascinating. Let’s start this post with a short review.

Since this collection is known as the Margaret Sappington Townsend collection and that she was the daughter of Wallace Sappington and his wife Annie Sutton Sappington, I’m going to assume that these two albums were created by her. If the name on her birth certificate is Marguerite, then I think there is a good chance that she was named after her grandmother. If any of you genealogists would like to give us a rundown on these folks, that would be wonderful.
This photograph can be found on page 26 (out of 52) of Album One. There is no information with it.
This photograph and the one that follows it can be found on page 40 of Album Two. I don’t know if this is the same car as the one in the first image. There are many photographs in Album Two that identify “MOM” the same way as this one does. I’m guessing that MOM is Annie Sutton Sappington and that Dad, Dr. Wallace Sappington, took this picture. I believe that is the Jefferson Memorial in Forest Park in the background. Having the year on the image is especially nice.
This is the second image from the same page. Nice ride! It’s no tin lizzie.
This is the first of two images found on page 53 of Album Two. “Mom’s home west of Sutton home” verifies what we already have learned from other images. Sutton home, in this case, refers to the Sutton mansion as it was often called. Notice the framework of the large yard swing in the background. It or something like it appears in several of the other photographs.
In this image, also from page 53, we get another look at Mom and a better look at that framework of the large swing (glider?).
In this image from page 66, we’re at Mom’s house again. I can’t be sure who is cutting the grass but I had the thought that it isn’t Dad.
On page 72 is this very interesting image of a car with right hand drive. These two gentlemen are parked almost directly in front of the Sappington house at 7477 Manchester Road. Hard to believe, ain’t it? Especially if you know what it looks like today.
I’m not sure what was happening in this picture but it is from the same page as the car. Perhaps the man in white is Dr. Sappington? The bench can also be seen in numerous photos.
On page 73 is another photograph of Mom’s home, this time with a dog.
On page 74 are the two gentlemen that we previously saw with the automobile. They are now in the yard of the Sappington home. Notice the bench.
Also from page 74, they are back with the car again. Now they have a woman with them as well.
On page 75 is the last of this series of automobile images. Now it looks like our two car guys have been joined by a different woman or possibly the same woman…different hat.
These two albums have proven to be very fertile ground for our Maplewood history digging! Thanks again to the folks at the Missouri Historical Society for preserving these images and making them available.
The forecast is for temperatures in the 90’s in the next few days. Summer is finally upon us. Yee haa! See you at the pool.
