A Maplewood shop owner was struck by a car early Saturday afternoon at the corner of Manchester Road and Marshall Avenue as he walked back to his business with a pastry from Foundation Grounds, and there were plenty of witnesses.

Steve Rye, 63, owner of Sole Survivor Leather (7312 Manchester Road), said he looked to make sure there was enough time on the light to cross — 18 seconds he remembers — and started walking across Marshall.

Update: The driver was located immediately and no charges were filed.

The driver was headed north on Marshall, turning right onto Manchester. Rye said it was probably an innocent mistake — he said she probably looked to her left, then continued to turn onto Manchester and didn’t see him.

Rye said the car grazed him. He rolled off the fender and onto the street. After it appeared the driver wasn’t going to stop, “I got angry,” Rye said Sunday at his store. He said he grabbed the door handle and tried to get the driver to stop, but the car kept going.

Several witnesses outside Foundation Grounds got the license plate number, and a Jimmy John’s delivery driver started following the car making a video of it as he drove. The video was given to police, Rye said. He said Maplewood emergency vehicles arrived on the scene quickly after the accident.

Rye was uninjured and was not taken to a hospital. He was in his shop on Sunday.
