Jane Callahan, owner of Pie Oh My in Maplewood, with an average Yelp rating of four and a half stars, was surprised when people started to order pies for weddings. Her shop makes pies from scratch with fresh, in-season ingredients.
She said they’ve baked pies for weddings every weekend since the last weekend in September, and are booked into November. She said it’s been a significant amount of business.
“The remarkable thing for us is that it’s really been organic,” she said. “We haven’t done anything to get out there and push the business, and market ourselves as wedding caterers, but we’re tickled with it.”
Her shop has delivered as many as 25 full size pies or 250 mini pies. She said those are big events, with several hundreds of people.
She said the brides, grooms and parents are fun to work with.
“One couple really wanted rhubarb pie, but it’s not rhubarb season anymore,” Callahan said. “The groom grew up in my home state, Minnesota, and his mother freezes rhubarb every year, so they brought, on ice, many bags of frozen rhubarb. So we had rhubarb pie for the wedding.”
She said another couple also wanted a small cake for photos, so Callahan sent them right across Sutton Boulevard to Encore Baking Company for that.
She said they’ll bake anything for a wedding that’s on the menu.
Callahan also mentioned that now is the time to order Thanksgiving pies. They’re offering apple double crust, apple crumble, pear apple cranberry crumble, pumpkin, pumpkin chocolate, sweet potato, pecan, bourbon chocolate pecan, pecan pumpkin, pumpkin walnut crumble and maple walnut.
