A semitrailer truck appeared to run over a stop sign and scrape a parked car as it made a turn at the corner of Lohmeyer and Sutton avenues in Maplewood around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.
The truck, from Beckmann Distribution (Carlyle, IL), was going north on Sutton, and backed up twice as it tried to make a turn left onto Lohmeyer. At least two pedestrians witnessed the turn.
The truck didn’t stop after turning onto Lohmeyer, and continued onto Big Bend Boulevard.
Maplewood Police were notified and came to the scene. A representative of Beckmann Distribution said Wednesday the company had been contacted, and is taking care of the situation.
Maybe if they didn’t make trucks so humongous these days, this wouldn’t even be a problem. But oh, that’s right. Trucking companies have bought off Congress and local legislators. So that will never happen.
I feel for the residents on Lohmeyer and Sutton avenues. It is a nice residential community. Perhaps the Alderman for the area can raise solutions to keep this large a truck from negotiating such small streets. Or the City can require vehicles exceeding (height, length, breadth, and tonage limits) to schedule for assistance, and calculate a charge to the company, apportioned for the individual variances. Sorry to see this happen.
