Southwest Avenue refinishing dependent on weather

The Metropolitan Sewer District finished installing storm sewer pipes on Southwest Avenue in February, and left the road drivable but rough. An MSD representative said that would be the case, and it’s up to the city — St. Louis or Maplewood, whichever the case — to completely finish it.

St. Louis commissioner of streets, Kent Flake, said in an email that refinishing the Southwest Avenue surface is scheduled for spring, with stipulations.

“We do not like to start paving until we have consistent high temps in the 70s, and of course no rain. I am anticipating completion of the paving in mid-April. This is St. Louis however and we could have another cool spell or weeks of rain. The 30-day forecast looks good, but once again this is St. Louis,” he said.

“Long story short is that when paving in cooler temps the quality goes down considerably and if quality is down the longevity will also go down,” Flake said.

  1. MSD said at a neighborhood meeting that they were done at the beginning of February and it would be open at the end of February after the City did the paving. Obviously there was a break down in communication.
