A resident on Laclede Station Road north of Manchester wondered about stakes that appeared in front yards there on Friday. The stakes have the initials O.I.P. hand printed on them.

Brian M. Herr, Maplewood’s building official/fire marshal said O.I.P. stands for “old iron pipe” and indicates the property corner as found by a surveyor. Herr said he doesn’t know why the the surveying was done.

The reader said the stakes are on her property corners, so the explanation makes sense. When she called Maplewood City Hall she was told AT&T is considering putting underground phone lines in the area.

AT&T utility marker flags are also in the ground at the south end of the street, by the Aldi grocery store.

  1. I thought I read somewhere that Laclede Gas is replacing some of their old iron gas lines in the Maplewood area. Could that be who had them placed there?
