A Maplewood resident emailed the 40 South editor asking if a photo is available of Albert Johnson, the man who stumbled and was killed by traffic as he crossed S. Bend Boulevard on Monday. She said it would be nice to know who he was.

“Many of us who walk about in Maplewood stop and talk to people that we see on a regular basis, but we do not necessarily know their names. It would be nice to be able to see a picture of him so we would know,” she said.

Police reported that he was 62 and lived in Maplewood. Update: Police tell 40 South that Albert Johnson lived on the 7500 block of Sussex Avenue.

Johnson was crossing Big Bend from White Castle toward QuikTrip when it happened. Employees at White Castle said he was a regular there.

An employee at another Maplewood business said he had “Don King hair.”

That’s all for now.

  1. It would be great to see a new story posted on this with the GoFundMe link! I’m sure people would like to help who may not see Merritt’s thoughtful comment. Just a thought, Doug!

  2. he was an African American and he would walk on south big bend and go to porters chicken. sometimes sit a qt

  3. Was it the older white guy that I always see on Laclede Station? I often see him walking in the middle of the street and he often looks confused or out of it. I don’t think I have seen him since this incident.

  4. Based on the description of Mr. Johnson from a friend, I think he was the man I saw walking up and down Big Bend all the time. It is so very sad.

    • Was he the older Caucasian guy with the long hair? He looked like an old surfer, the one I’m thinking of.
I would see him walking up and down Big Bend at least a couple of times a week. He used to sit outside on the patio of the VFW hall with a pitcher of beer by himself too.
